“Vindictive, lowlife, slimy—” D’Andres rages, muscling his way past Dov’s scythe and standing dumbstruck in the place his daughter and the two vampires just… I don’t even know what happened. Poofed. Just disappeared into a damn puff of smoke.

Is that shadow stepping? I’ve read about it, but never seen it, never had anyone explain it in vivid detail like that. It was almost like someone snuffing out a candle, there and gone with a curl of air and a sweet, brief explosion of smell.

Keep it cool. I’ve got them thinking I’m weirdly smart and well versed in hunting vampires. If they figure out I picked most of this up from piecing shit together from the internet, I am beyond screwed.

I get the idea I will lose all credibility I have scrounged together if they figure out most of my intelligence comes from a site called SuperStalkers dot com…

Who’m I kidding? I’m screwed anyway, really, since Dov went and gave my dad my full fucking name. And he is most certainly my dad—he looks just like Enzi, aged up twenty years physically and twelve lifetimes emotionally.

He’s gotta know it’s me… right? Do I look like him—like Mom? He gawked at me like I do. That’s gotta mean something.

He’s avoiding my eyes like it’s his job now, so that’s gotta count, too.

“How nice,” Dov growls at him, pulling me out of my panic state by an inch, “you’re becoming self-aware.”

D’Andres whirls on him, snarling from sharpened bear teeth. “If you ever,” he roars, “get in my way like that again—”

“The first time I pulled your soul out of your throat was an accident,” Dov says. Somehow, the rage and anger is matched, if not even stronger than D’s, but his voice doesn’t show it. It’s all in his energy, in the threatening way he holds himself still and strong in the face of certain death. “It will be intentional if you ever go after Ursula that way again.”

“You don’t have the ground to stand on here.”

“No?” Dov chuckles. “What’re you gonna do? Break the bond? Kill me? Good luck finding a reaper to do it in these parts—let alone one who’ll fucking listen to you.”

D’Andres sobers, stepping closer, until Dov is shrouded in his pounding dark energy. Still, the reaper doesn’t move. He hardly reacts.

Me? I’m dying, cringing externally and taking a massive step away from the two of them before I get caught in the crosshairs.

“Personal invincibility does not extend to family, Dov,” D’Andres growls. “Your father is alone quite a lot while you’re shadowing my daughter. Keep that in mind.”

Dov’s face falls, his fists clenching at his sides. Still, the scythe disappears.

“Find her,” D’Andres booms, daring a glance back my way. Extending the order to me, too. Like I’m part of this, and I can’t contain the thrill that gives me. “And bring her to me.”

Then he bolts down the stairs, screaming at the other members in the house.

“She’s gonna kill you,” Dov says.

The giddy smile on my face quickly morphs into a sneer.
